Rock & Roll is dead.
Miles de personas congregadas en torno a un escenario, los Foo Fighters cierran el Lollapalooza. Bajo la lluvia pertinaz Grohl incita al público a corear más fuerte, y la audiencia le sigue. Un sólo grito eufórico, el piso empieza a vibrar a medida que todos se contagian con los saltos de Dave sobre el escenario. Alguien observa en la distancia y piensa: “El rock está muerto”.
Slane Castle, Red Hot Chili Peppers. Las canciones empiezan con inolvidables solos, y la multitud enloquece de principio a fin. Kiedis corre de lado a lado del escenario, Flea y Frusciante parecen estar en otra dimensión, el público se transporta con ellos. A lo lejos alguien grita: “El rock está muerto”.
Es el Último Concierto, los titanes se separan, y nadie pierde la ocasión de verlos juntos por última vez. Quien está más cerca al escenario y quien a escasas alcanza a ver de lo lejos que se encuentra de él, todos igualmente extasiados. Ésta es la despedida, ésta es la ocasión. Una frase queda para la historia “Gracias, totales”, y es allí cuando definitivamente queda claro: “El rock está muerto”.
La frase que más de uno escuchó a lo largo de su vida, que incluso hasta sus padres repitieron con el ánimo que la “oveja negra” que el hijo rebelde sin causa, dejará de oír ésa “música del demonio” a todo volumen. Serían mis épocas de colegio cuando empecé a hacer del rock mi compañero, mi cómplice de vivencias y sentimientos encontrados. Presenciando aunque muchas veces distancia, aquel movimiento noventero, quizá uno de los más fuertes del género, pensaba desde ésa época y ni siquiera habiendo llegado a la adolescencia que no pudo decirse frase más lejana a la realidad. Con el paso de los años la creencia crecía y muchas bandas parecían ir en decadencia, era la justificación perfecta para afirmar que el rock era una tendencia más que un género musical dado que parecía estar en “vía de extinción”.
Entre escepticismos por una lado y fanatismos por el otro, la década vio nacer al grunge como un movimiento fuerte, y dentro del mismo figuras que hasta la fecha se mantienen vigentes a pesar de ser la misma rapidez con que florecieron la misma con que abandonaron la escena. El ejemplo por excelencia: Kurt Cobain. Un personaje que nadie recuerda, cuyo estilo incluso hasta de vestir nadie más siguió, ni sigue a la fecha y por eso es aún más evidente: “El rock está muerto”.
Tras él nace un maestro, uno de los músicos quizá más importantes en la actualidad, Dave Grohl. Sin embargo conviene recordar que medio mundo no lo idolatra (y por supuesto ¡yo menos!) porque simple y sencillamente, “El rock está muerto”. Nadie asiste a los conciertos, nadie invierte su dinero en un género tan paupérrimo, incapaz de generar emociones, de mover masas de generar tanto amores como odios. Nadie tuvo toda una experiencia al ver a Dave Grohl en medio del público, como cualquier otro asistente yendo a ver una de sus bandas favoritas. Quien lo tuvo al lado nunca puso su atención en captarlo en video antes de ver a Soundgarden, agrupación por la que pagó su entrada. Nadie viajó kilómetros y kilómetros por tierra para tener la oportunidad de ver a Pearl Jam en Buenos Aires, ni se endeudó tres y cuatro sueldos para pagara a crédito la entrada al concierto de su banda rock favorita. Por todo lo anteriormente mencionado quiero confesar a todo aquel que haya leído estas líneas, que odio el rock y que concuerdo con la tan mentada idea. Las evidencias han sido expuestas, de modo que sí señores, sigan en su idea, en definitivita “El rock está muerto”.
